Narrated in several acts, this drama full of the human touch and red colour is a genuine example of Bergman’s masterful work with the mise-en-scène, actresses and language of meanings and symbols. On a backdrop of nineteenth century novels and paintings, we view a symbolic prison built out of social stereotypes and expectations consisting mainly of women. Only when facing death can the four protagonists live out their existential awakening or an impressionistically fleeting moment of happiness.
