Tosca is the joint musical project of Rupert Huber and Richard Dorfmeister (also known from the famous duo Kruder & Dorfmeister) from Vienna, Austria. Tosca albums are considered milestones of the downtempo genre: masters of deluxe soundscapes and sensual rhythms creating a luxurious tapestry of analogue and digital sounds, submerged samples and live instruments. The musical trademark of Tosca is a cheerful laid-back feel that emanates a warm and occasionally melancholic atmosphere reminiscent of the air of Viennese cafés. In 2001, the Tosca project won the prestigious national Amadeus award in the category Best National Rock/Pop Group.
Space is a relevant word for my music. The virtual space of recorded or processed sounds transferred into real space, the combination of score and expression in the projected soundspace; the idea of loudspeakers as real persons in a room, talking loudspeakers, and the work on the tuned and tempered piano combined in a real space. My work with and for voices indicates my idea of groove and often enough my idea of language.
Tosca is a pleasant journey into both sound and space, with tour guides who know their surroundings well.
Classic is like a vintage Porsche. The lines and curves of its shape are timeless, evoking a reaction that is comforting in its familiarity. The designers stay true to its original inception, striving to modernize while maintaining a tie to the past. Tosca is just like that famed sports car. With each new release, their sound is refined but never deviates from their formula. On their latest release No Hassle, these two Viennese downtempo greats continue to demonstrate they are well-oiled machines, achieving a higher standard while maintaining the elements of their characteristic sound.
It has the ability to put listeners in a hypnotic state of ease, where they can mentally skip out on their hardships, even if just for an hour. Man, is it nice.
Listening to anything by Tosca is always a gloriously self-indulgent experience.
Rupert Huber (b. 1967) studied composition at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. He plays piano, synthesizer, guitar and bass. He's a free-lance composer based in Vienna. Piano music and sound installations in public spaces are among Rupert Huber's main areas of interest. He integrates space and the electronic and/or psychological projection of musical or tonal content into his compositions. Such dimensional music that he has developed as a musical format is the basis of all his work. Rupert Huber has not only implemented his ideas artistically; he has also applied them to music composed for film (Food Design, Berggasse 19), TV (C.S.I. Miami, Sex and the City) and radio (signature tunes for the ORF – Austrian Broadcasting Company's Ö1 Kunstradio).
