National Theatre Prague

The National Theatre Prague (ND) is the representative stage of the Czech Republic. As is stated in the Preamble to the theatre’s Statute, it is “one of the symbols of national identity and part of the European cultural space. It is both a carrier of national cultural heritage and a space for free artistic creation.” Four artistic ensembles – Drama, Opera, Ballet, and the multimedia company Laterna magika – take part in its presentation, building their repertoire not only around the rich heritage of classics, but also focusing on modern drama from around the world.

The Drama Ensemble of the National Theatre with its forty actors is the largest theatre company in the Czech Republic. Classic titles of Czech and international repertoire are offered in the buildings of the National and Estates Theatres, while the progressive New Stage presents original authorial projects and Czech premieres. Since the 2022/2023 season, Martin Kukučka (1979) and Lukáš Trpišovský (1979) – a directorial tandem working under the name SKUTR – have been the theatre’s artistic directors.

ND Young is a community of young people, former and current participants of the courses led by the Drama Ensemble’s lecturer, Zuzana Kráľová.
