“Our performances aim to bring people who would otherwise be on different sides together and to create a sense of unity and community.”
The independent Flemish-Dutch theatre collective Wunderbaum collaborates with leading theatres in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. From 2018 to 2022, the collective artistically directed the Theaterhaus Jena, where, among others, it created the highly successful production Die Hundekot-Attacke, named German-Language Production of the Year and which closed the Flora Theatre Festival last year.
Since 2010, Wunderbaum’s permanent base has been at Theater Rotterdam. The ensemble is comprised of actors Maartje Remmers, Marleen Scholten, Matijs Jansen, Walter Bart, Wine Dierickx, and stage designer Maarten van Otterdijk, who equally share both creative and production duties. For more than 20 years, Wunderbaum has been creating internationally acclaimed productions, in which humour, music, and societal engagement are masterfully connected. They look for ideas for their productions in stories that are unknown or have not received enough attention, as well as in the urgent topics of our time. They often draw on personal experiences that reflect their political positions, but at the same time confront them with different opinions and perspectives, creating a space for much-needed dialogue. Also typical is their work with non-actors and people outside the theatre world – such as refugees from Syria, teenagers from detention centres, or the elderly.
They have won numerous awards, including the Total Theatre Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (2014), Theo d’Or (2016), the Premio Drammaturgico Nazionale Antonio Conti (2020), the Martin Linzer Theaterpreis (2022), and the 3sat-Preis (2024).
