Činoherní studio Ústí nad Labem was formed in 1972 on the foundations of the Kladivadlo ensemble, which had been closed down by the regime. It became a centre where a number of artists who were persecuted by the regime and who sought to find a topical statement in their work had a chance to create. This emphasis is still evident in the theatre’s dramaturgy today.
“Činoherák” builds its repertoire not only on original and radical adaptations of classic dramatic texts (Shakespeare, Molière, Ibsen) and dramatizations of contemporary prose, but in recent years it has also focused on the creation of authorial productions. The first ever staging of the novel Fight Club (2008) became iconic – the successful production directed by Filip Nuckolls received 100 performances and stayed in repertoire for a record ten years. A similar success marked the dramatization of Max Frisch’s novel Homo Faber (2017). Činoherní studio also runs Atelier*52 – a project that educates young audiences in theatre theory and gives them insight into the process of creating productions.
Starting with the 2025–2026 season, Michal Hába has taken over as artistic director; together with director Michal Somoš and dramaturg Veronika Linka, his proposal was selected in last year’s open competition.
