Jiří Adámek Austerlitz

Jiří Adámek Austerlitz (b. 1977) is one of the leading figures in contemporary alternative theatre in the Czech Republic. He studied directing at the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he currently teaches. He has had several internships in France, where he was acquainted with postmodern theatre musicals, which greatly influenced his work. He has developed an original form of “sonic theatre”, blending a musically composed structure with vocal techniques between speech and song. He has been developing his specific approach to language and speech (deconstruction, fragmentation, rhythmization) primarily with his theatre group Boca Loca Lab. His ageless performance Tiká tiká politika (Tick Tock Politics, 2006) became a phenomenon – it earned Adámek both domestic and international awards and has remained in the repertoire of the Alfréd ve dvoře theatre for 20 years.
Adámek has guest-directed at many Czech theatres – Studio Hrdinů, HaDivadlo, Divadlo Komedie, New Stage at National Theatre Prague, and Divadlo Minor. As a librettist and director, he collaborates on musical-theatrical compositions, staged concerts, and new operas, including those for children.
He works as a writer and director at Czech Radio. The radio play Mother of God, Drive Putin Away received Honourable Mention at the prestigious international Prix Europa 2025 festival in the Audio Fiction category and subsequently won 3rd place in the Drama category at the Prix Bohemia Radio festival.
