    PRECARIOUS MOVES Michael Turinsky
    – Tanzquartier Wien – HAU Hebbel am Ufer Berlin

The Viennese choreographer, performer, theorist and activist in the field of inclusion portrays the relationship of a disabled person towards society with grace and a detached view. This playful, funny and self-reflective production, created in coproduction with Tanzquartier Wien and HAU Hebbel am Ufer Berlin, was awarded the Nestroy Prize for the best Austrian Off-Production of 2021. “Is movement with disability like tonic without gin? Or breakfast without coffee?”
    Discussion follows.

What is choreography? Where does a work of dance begin and end? Who in our society is allowed to create it, who is allowed to perform it, and what conditions precede it? Internationally acclaimed choreographer, dancer, theorist and activist Michael Turinsky has long been reflecting on the field of dance in relation to inclusion. In his unconventional stage projects, in which conceptual dance meets biographical theatre and lecture performance, he consistently breaks down stereotypes about disabled people and pushes the boundaries of contemporary dance into new, surprising realms.

In his latest solo performance, Precarious Moves, he explores the phenomena of movement – both on a personal and political level. How to live in a society dominated by the culture of speed, activity and mobility when you move around in a wheelchair? What to do when all structures are set up against you, not for you? When it takes little to throw you off balance and make you hit your own limits? Inspired by the concept of “Crip Time,” which draws attention to the fact that in many life situations, people with disabilities need more time, Turinsky opposes the dictates of a world driven by speed. In Precarious Moves, he focuses on gestures and moments of resistance to it. Or in the words of non-binary artist Johanna Hedva: “You don't need to be fixed, my queens – it's the world that needs the fixing.

This inspiring solo, full of insightful points, disarming (self-)irony and evocative dance, won the Austrian Nestroy Theatre Prize in the “Best Off-Production” category. Michael Turinsky will present it for the first time ever in the Czech Republic, at the Flora Theatre Festival.

He also studies discourses of productive tension between politics and aesthetics.
He has collaborated with artists such as Bert Gstettner, Barbara Kraus, Claire Vivienne Sobottke, and Tereza Vitucci.
