A trio of original musicians with chequered artistic background play electronic music in a peculiar mix of styles accompanied by knocked-off Czech vocals and original video art. MIDI LIDI came into being as a remnant of the project Krásný stěhovák Gerard & Sexuální nábytek (Gerard the Handsome Mover & Sexual Furniture) out of which a trio of musicians Prokop Holoubek, Markéta Lisá and Petr Marek originated. They were later joined by a trio of video artists Filip Cenek, Magdalena Hrubá and Jan Šrámek who make visuals for the band's live shows. The unmistakable retro-electro sound of MIDI LIDI is characterized by dance beats, miniature gags, distance and invention. The musicians themselves describe their music as “Kraftwerk meets Chumbawamba”. MIDI LIDI made the original soundtrack for the Czech movie Protector which won them the Czech Lion award. The Slovak composer Marek Piaček made a symphony in their tribute called The Symphony of All Midi Lidi People.
Don't be mistaken by all the electronic buzz – this is indeed an outstandingly warm album.
With their second album, Midi Lidi give hints of going further than what they have achieved so far, and the new record replaces the sophisticated post-Kraftwerk layers by more varied sound impressions. They are the true and only masters in combining club music and extrovert pop tunes on the Czech scene at the moment.
A mix that will make you think twice whether this is only a game, a joke or intention of sort. ML are definitely not your ordinary “track-producing” electro band. Their compositions are peopled by bizarre stories clothed in an unusually ordinary and informal air reflected in the track titles: Pes (The Dog), Bujon (Bouillon), Agent, Strejdo (Dear Uncle), with each of them concealing a minor life drama.
